boyband break-ups. ♥

How to deal when your guys disband or take a break.

Idol longevity is am uncertain reality. Everything from agency conflicts to non-renewal of management contracts to the desire to go solo to disagreements among members can lead to a break-up. Get through an indefinite hiatus or a permanent disbandment with some easy coping tips:

DITCH DENIAL FOR ACCEPTANCE
As a fan, issue like these are beyond our control. Denying what has been officially confirmed, getting angry, and blaming it on someone is super unhealthy. Though it may be hard - not to mention painful at first - accepting the reality of disbandment or hiatus is the first step towards healing.

FIND A SUPPORT GROUP
Fan club forums and blogs are great venues where you can interact with fellow fans who, like you, are also coping with the situation. Fan clubs organize projects (birthday gift projects for idol group members, outreach projects, concert screenings, merchandise orders, etc.) which you can participate in. Keep busy, expand your network of fan friends, and turn something negative in to something good.

BELIEVE
A hiatus does not mean the end. There is still hope for idol groups who have simply gone into a hiatus or have not officially confirmed their disbandment. A future reunion or comeback, though indefinite, will indeed be worth the wait. It's not over until the fat K-pop lady sings! Until then.. keep the faith and believe.

CATCH UP ON WHAT YOU'VE MISSED
Search the 'net for clips you've missed. Though they may not be active onstage, you'll find your idol group immortalized online. A lot of footage gems are waiting to be discovered!

LOOK FORWARD TO CHANGE
Time away from the idol group will allow members to grow more as an individual and develop new skills. Going solo is an opportunity for your favorite K-pop stars to shine, mature as artists, and even branch out into other field such as drama and theater production - it's a chance to see them in a whole new light.

MOVING ON DOESN'T MEAN FORGETTING
The bond between an idol group and their fans is a strong one that lives on for as long as each keeps the other in their hearts.

How old is “Too Old” in Kpop?

How old is “Too Old” in Kpop?
»encore

In summer 2010, GP Basic‘s debut made netizens’ tongues wag and put on their judging caps. Their controversy surrounded their maknae, or youngest group member. Janey was only 12 when the group made their splash onto the Kpop scene with their single “Game”. Netizens, fans and the media all voiced their concerns. “Shouldn’t she be in elementary school, not wearing age-inappropriate costumes and prancing on stage?” “Doesn’t her parents know any better?! She’s lost her innocence!” It’s a fact that labels like to recruit idol prospects at a young age – the longer they’re trained, the better they’ll be come debut. As long as they possess some talent, drive and understand what they’re getting into, the age they start isn’t a problem. In fact, the average age for a prospective idol is between 14-19. Additionally, starting young means big potential for a long, prosperous contract.

Now, let’s look at the other side of the spectrum. Exactly how old is too old to be in the business? Lee Hyori, Park Kahi of After School, and Uhm Jung Hwa are all examples of currently active Kpop idols who happen to be over 30. All three have been in the business for over a decade and have several successful hits under their belts. Their beauty easily rival girls 10 years their junior. Most are unmarried and live a glamorous, yet busy lifestyle and seem to genuinely enjoy their work. They must – after all, they’ve stuck it out for this long.

Some people feel they might be reaching that hill and it’s their time to go over it. With so many idol groups debuting in 2011 alone, they feel it’s time to make that traditional adage true – “out with the old, in with the new”. It has nothing to do with their looks, talent, or potential to break out another chart topping hit. Longtime followers of Kpop know they still got it. The thumbs-downers are simply concerned with their age. The reasoning usually consist of the following:

-Give the younger idols a chance to shine now – you’ve had your moment for years!
-It’s time for fresh faces and a new direction for Kpop music.
-Why not retire from the business, settle down and live happily ever after?
-Isn’t it tradition for young Korean women to be married by their ages anyway?

Interestingly enough, these arguments don’t apply to idols who have been in the biz for as long as they have, but aren’t past 30. BoA debut at 14 and has been active for about 10 years now. She clearly meets the veteran status, yet because she’s of the average idol age currently, she’s still free to make music without being dubbed as overdone, overexposed or criticized to hell.

Thankfully, the condescending voice of nay-sayers to active artists past their 30s remain small as a whole. The grand majority aren’t put off by their age and in fact love that they’re still fierce competition among those much younger. There are fans who’ve followed Hyori since her days with Fin.KL, and are still her fans today. Growing up with your favorite stars usually grants the idol a fan for life. I for one love all three of the aforementioned. I’ve also followed BoA since her debut and am liking what GP Basic has to offer so far.

What do you think? Do you feel the Kpop industry should only be populated with idols in their teens and 20s? Is 30+ “too old” to be singing and prancing on stage, even if the talent and looks are on point? If you were pushing 30 yourself, do you feel you have zero chance to break into the business solely because of your age?

editors letter:

Old skool '90s kpop. Old skool, throwback, '90s, whatever you wanna call it.. finally, here's a space for old veterans of our obsession, where everything started.
These were the jams from the mid 90s to early 00s and contributed a lot of what K-pop is today, these groups were very unique and different. Not that i don't like the new Kpop but I really hate how a lot of bands are debuting now. Looks and their bodies are mainly everything now-a-days kpop. Everyone basically look the same and act the same. Before I even got the chance to learn a new band, another comes out. It feels like hundred of bands are coming out when their skills are not fully develop.
I recently got into Jpop now and when I see Korean artist going to Japan, I’m scared that the original Japanese music style will be gone. There weren’t fan-wars either but now fan-wars has gotten worst now.
It’s a good thing that Kpop is worldwide now, but now i lets just go back in time and enjoy the old kpop.

- 2009 45th Baeksang Awards: Most Popular TV Actor (Kim Hyun Joong)

RATINGS:

Title: i'm kinda confused with the title, how did some flowers associate with boys, throughout the drama i never saw JanDi pick boys before flowers or maybe flowers meant something different - 9

Characters: wise choice of actors and actresses! they really fit and portrayed the characters well, but it made me compare with (my most favorite drama ever!!) Meteor Garden - 9

OSTs: the musical scores and songs make dramas more interesting. i think the songs in the drama really fit well but the most annoying part of the entire drama was playing background music when the characters were supposed to be playing instruments. - 9

Final Note: 9

Authors Note:

-I usually don’t criticize a person’s acting skills much but – in his brief appearances, Kim Jong Jin (who played Yi Jeong’s father in the drama) displayed the worst acting I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe that’s how his character was written, or maybe that’s how he was directed to act – but wow….his dialogues with Yi Jeong were just painful to watch.
-I didn’t mind the prospect of not having Yi Jeong and Ga Eul to get in the end, but I really like how they wrapped things up. Adorable!
-I’m so sad that Secretary Jung wasn’t in the final episode.
-Lee Min Ho (Gu Jun Pyo in BOF) and Matsumoto Jun (Tsukasa in HYD) both played their parts so well in their respective dramas that I can’t imagine anyone else in their roles.
-Hurrah for Chairwoman Gu Jun Hee!

although I found it amusing, some parts were boring and a bit unrealistic (and sometimes the characters are a bit stupid). Like the way Jan Di just kept willingly getting in random cars that stop in front of her without knowing who’s inside and where they’re taking her – not too smart. And the show makes it appear as though the entire student body lives to take orders from F4 and are not capable of thinking for themselves – this kinda annoyed me.

One thing that confused me a lot was the whole “soulmate versus husband” idea. There was a scene in the series when Jan Di had her fortune told during a vacation she had with the F4. The fortune teller told her that her soulmate was nearby, but he wouldn’t become her husband. Obviously, if you watched the show, Jan Di’s soulmate was Ji Hoo (this was confirmed in the last episode as well), but she still chose Jun Pyo to be her lover. This irritated me because I found it so stupid. Why marry someone else when you consider another guy your soulmate? It somehow feels like cheating to me. Maybe the Korean translation for “soulmate” has a different meaning, I don’t know.

and i love JanDi + Ji Hoo couple :D and here are the few moments that i found really memorable:
-The first time Jan Di sees Ji Hoo. Violin + Kim Hyun Joong + dreamy music = kyaaaaah~
-When he rescued Jan Di from being raped (or whatever it was those guys were planning).
-The time he let Jan Di borrow his shoes.
-Jan Di’s and Ji Hoo’s wedding photoshoot (Ji Hoo in a white suit – need a say more?)
-The time when he took a bite out of the chocolates that Jan Di gave Jun Pyo.
-When he accidentally walked in on Jan Di in the bathroom. I love the little note that he stuck to her breakfast tray after that <3
-The times when Ji Hoo waited for Jan Di after her swimming training. The first time (I think) was when he was wearing a beanie – aww!! And the other time when he bought her some medicine because she was sick.
-Ji Hoo offering to stay another year in school just so Jan Di wouldn’t be lonely – can this guy get any sweeter? i just love this part :3

I know that Ji Hoo wasn’t the main character in the story, but he was definitely my favorite! overall i like this drama :D

editor's letter:

we can't live without them, our other halves. They make our Kpop fan life complete, from smirking, laughing, cracking up a joke, tearing of his shirt, dancing like theirs no tomorrow, whether he's a fashion terrorist or a fashionista, the way his veins pop out when singing or in rapping, we all love that. so, this issue let's dedicated it to the Boys who we love to love and love to hate. whether he's a Korean working abroad or any nationality working in the Kpop industry, i know you love them.

Onew from SHINee (below), Jeongmin (upper) and Minwoo (middle) of Boyfriend all wore the same shirt. Who will you choose, Onew who pulled a rocker-vibe in a live performance with SHINee or Jeongmin who keep it simple with a black jacket during practice or Minwoo who partnered it with denims.

Who do you think wore it the best? You decide!
